USA news on Youtube Feb 19 2018

- I am most passionate about helping somebody

to be at their best.

My name is Rebeccah Rodríguez Regner

and I'm family practice and sports medicine physician.

My favorite part of my work is being able

to build relationships with patents and athletes.

My job is never the same each day.

I've been able to be over at the Elite Training Center

in Chula Vista with Olympic athletes,

I've been backstage with San Diego Ballet dancers

sidelines for football,

I've been able to travel with the Olympic athletes

to Rio at the 2016 Olympics.

That was a dream come true and a wonderful experience.

The first situation that got me into studying--into medicine

was my dad.

He was a medic in the Air Force.

He always used to have that black doctor's bag

in his closet filled with

lots of tape and patches,

and medical scissors.

I remember my sister and brother and we used to hide

in the closet

and bandage each other up.

My ethnic background comes from Spanish, Mexican,

Portuguese, French, Italian, and Irish descend.

With that mix, I think also growing up in Arizona,

we celebrate a little bit more of the Mexican culture

predominantly, everything from our food types

to birthdays,

to slang words or phrases that we grew up with

in Spanish, but we didn't grow up speaking Spanish

in our household.

What made want to study Spanish was

to be connected to my culture.

I felt that there was a lot of opportunity

to communicate with my family members,

especially my grandpa and it's definitely helped

so that I could see patients in the office and treat them

because I know the language.

¿Tienes dolor aquí?

- Sí.

- At three years old, my dad enrolled me in dance

because I used to be really, really shy.

That was the thing that opened the shell.

I was able to interact more with people,

and gain confidence.

It was great to learn about body placement,

and anatomy and physiology.

It gave me a chance to perform and, again, to really gain

a lot of life lessons that I apply today.

Senior year, there is the decision that I had to make

about choosing to pursue dance, acting and singing,

or choose academics and go to college.

I thought about how hard my parents worked.

They each had two jobs that they were working,

and for all the time and energy that they gave to us

to help us,

there's something more that I feel like I could do

in order to help take care of them when I got older.

So choosing medicine helped

to fulfill a lot of different things within my life.

My home now is in Vista, California,

in a country like setting.

My family consists of my husband John,

and our dog Slick.

We have our growths, have different herbs,

so that really makes a great difference for us

when we're cooking, that we have this fresh ingredients.

- You want to try it? - That's good.

For fun, I still like to dance.

[música hip hop]

Whether that is going through choreography in my head,

watching the award shows,

I still trying to do choreography.

♪ ♪

A little bit different route but luckily

I get to still keep that passion going

and be involved with the dancers and sports medicine.
