Rose is the most popular and most beautiful flower worldwide.
Infact Rose is the National Flower of USA and UK.
There is no single definitive system of categorizing roses, but commonly they are divided them
into 3 main categories: 1.
Wild (or Species) Roses, 2.
Old Garden Roses, and 3.
Modern Roses or Standard Roses.
Wild (Species) Roses We wont spend much time on this as these
are wild roses; these are the species that havent been hybridized by humans.
So lets move on to Old Garden Roses (Old Desi Roses or Shrub
Roses) Old Garden Roses are also called as heritage
or historic roses.
They are species that were popular before the 20th century.
Most of these are characterized by their hardiness (able to withstand a cold winter) and disease
resistance.
These roses are grown to beautify gardens because they are easy to maintain and hardy
compared to the English Roses.
Old Garden Roses are also much more fragrant than the modern or standard roses.
The downside of garden roses is that they generally do not have the vase life like standard
roses, meaning the cut flowers do not stay longer in vases compared to Modern roses.
Stronger garden rose that is desi rose varieties will last at the most 3-7 days whereas a strong
standard rose that is English rose variety can last up to 2 weeks (of-course with proper
care & handling).
Examples of Old Garden Roses are Hybrid perpetual roses and Tea roses which were then crossed
to produce the Hybrid Tea Rose.
Now Most of the Garden roses or desi roses we refer to are predominantly hybrid roses
that are grown as ornamental plants in our gardens.
Modern Roses or Standard Roses eg: Sweetheart rose and Hybrid tea rose.
These are the species that most people imagine when you think of a ROSE.
The largest class of these is hybrid tea roses and what the cut flower industry will simply
call roses.
These are roses that will continually bloom ( unlike most Old Garden Roses or desi roses
that only bloom once per season).
The modern roses have a larger bloom size and a longer vase life.
But the main drawback of these Modern roses is no longer have a fragrance like the desi
rose.
They also do not have the hardiness and disease resistance like the desi roses.
Some of the Sub groups of Modern Roses are English Roses, Hybrid Tea Roses, Polyantha,
Floribunda, Grandiflora, Climbing rose, Button Rose or miniature rose, etc
English Roses Actually a sub-group of modern roses and is
not an official class of roses.
English Roses were First Started in the 1960s by British breeder, Mr. David Austin and hence
they are also sometimes called as Austin Roses.
Mr. Austin wanted to create rose bushes that would combine the best features of the old
garden roses and the modern roses ( like the Hybrid Teas, Floribundas and Grandifloras).
To do this, Mr. Austin crossed the old roses with some of the modern roses to gain a repeat
flowering rose bush that also had the wonderful strong fragrances of the old roses.
Mr. Austin was truly successful at this experiment and thus he contributed English rose bushes
that have wonderful, strong fragrances as well as the ones that come in various delightful
colors.
Plus these are hardy rose bushes as well.
Please have a look at this table showing the differences between the Garden Rose or Desi
rose vs the Standard or Modern Roses.
