US Embassy in Haiti temporarily closed after anti-Trump protests
The U.S. Embassy in Haiti was temporarily closed on Monday, The Associated Press reported,
after demonstrators took to the streets in Port-au-Prince to protest President Trump.
More than 1,000 people reportedly marched toward the embassy, which was blocked off
by barricades.
Some protesters threw rocks and officers fired tear gas during the demonstration, according
to the AP.
The protest came after Trump reportedly said during a White House meeting that Haiti and
some African nations were "shithole countries."
Trump faced widespread backlash and accusations of racism after the reported comments.
The president has pushed back against the reports and denied he is racist.
This past weekend, hundreds of Haitian-Americans and Haitians living in New York City protested
outside of Trump Tower.
Demonstrators waived Haitian flags, beat drums and blew horns while chanting slogans at the
president.
Earlier this month, hundreds of protesters gathered near Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in
Florida.

Trump imposes 30 percent tariff on solar panel imports - Duration: 2:39.
Trump imposes 30 percent tariff on solar panel imports
Trump on Monday imposed tariffs of 30 percent on imported solar panel technology in a bid
to protect domestic manufacturers while signaling a more aggressive approach toward China.
The move is a major blow for the $28 billion solar industry, which gets about 80 percent
of its solar panel products from imports.
The Solar Energy Industries Association predicted the tariffs would increase prices and kill
23,000 jobs.
The group represents manufacturers as well as installers, sellers and others in the field.
While tariffs in this case will not create adequate cell or module manufacturing to meet
U.S. demand, or keep foreign-owned Suniva and SolarWorld afloat, they will create a
crisis in a part of our economy that has been thriving, which will ultimately cost tens
of thousands of hard-working, blue-collar Americans their jobs, Abigail Ross Hopper,
the group's president, said in a statement.
Suniva and SolarWorld Americas, the bankrupt companies which requested the tariffs, say
tariffs would boost domestic manufacturing and add more than 100,000 jobs.
The tariffs unveiled Monday apply to all imported solar photovoltaic cells and modules, the
main technology on panels that convert solar energy into electricity.
While the action is targeted at imports from China, Trumps tariffs apply to all imports,
since Chinese manufacturers have moved operations to other countries.
The presidents action makes clear again that the Trump administration will always
defend American workers, farmers, ranchers and businesses in this regard, U.S. Trade
Representative Robert Lighthizer said in a statement Monday announcing the decision along
with a decision to impose tariffs on imported washers.
SolarWorld Americas, a unit of a German company, said in a statement that it was grateful for
Trumps work, but it is still reviewing whether the tariffs are high enough.
It had sought 50 percent tariffs.
We are still reviewing these remedies, and are hopeful they will be enough to address
the import surge and to rebuild solar manufacturing in the United States, Juergen Stein, the
companys CEO, said in a statement.
We will work with the U.S. government to implement these remedies, including future
negotiations, in the strongest way possible to benefit solar manufacturing and its thousands
of American workers to ensure that U.S. solar manufacturing is world-class competitive for
the long term.
Suniva, meanwhile, cheered the tariffs.

Man arrested, accused of threatening to kill CNN employees
A Michigan man was arrested after allegedly threatening to shoot and kill CNN employees,
WGCL-TV reported Monday.
The FBI launched an investigation after the man, who is unnamed in the CBS report, reportedly
called CNN 22 times about a week ago.
"Fake news.
I'm coming to gun you all down, the man told a CNN operator, according to court documents
obtained by WGCL-TV.
He allegedly later called CNN again, saying, "I'm smarter than you.
More powerful than you.
I have more guns than you.
More manpower.
Your cast is about to get gunned down in a matter of hours."
"I am coming to Georgia right now to go to the CNN headquarters to f---ing gun every
single last one of you, he said.
The FBI were able to trace the call and arrested the man over the threats.
President Trump has repeatedly attacked the media, including CNN, calling coverage of
himself and his administration fake news. The network was among the winners of Trumps
Fake News Awards last week.
Trump also retweeted out an edited GIF of him wrestling a man with the CNN logo superimposed
on his head, as well as an image of him with what appeared to the CNN logo in a splatter
of blood on the bottom of his shoe.
Journalists have criticized Trumps attacks on the media, and warning that him lashing
out against the press could lead to actual acts of violence against reporters.

Trump lauds 'big win' after Dems 'cave' on shutdown, Schumer criticized - Duration: 3:04.
Trump lauds 'big win' after Dems 'cave' on shutdown, Schumer criticized
President Trump struck an optimistic tone on Twitter after he signed a bill to reopen
the government late Monday night after a 69-hour federal government shutdown that led to Senate
Democrats backing off their opposition.
Earlier in the day, Congress agreed on a measure that will fund the government for three weeks.
The agreement will keep the government funded until Feb. 8.
Big win for Republicans as Democrats cave on Shutdown, Trump tweeted, after he kept
a low profile during the weekend.
Now I want a big win for everyone, including Republicans, Democrats and DACA, but especially
for our Great Military and Border Security.
Should be able to get there.
See you at the negotiating table. Some items on the top of the agenda are Deferred
Action for Childhood Arrivals and border security.
Trump has said he wants a deal in place to legalize the country's 700,000 Dreamers.
Despite getting Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell , R-Ky., to allow debate on the
immigration issue, Democrats faced immediate backlash within their own ranks for not pushing
harder on the immigration law.
Nor did they get a promise that the Senate will approve their desired change, nor did
they get any commitment from House Republicans to do anything at all, James Freeman wrote
in The Wall Street Journal.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., who backed Monday's agreement during a speech
on the chamber's floor, was criticized for his handling of the negotiations.
Schumer was seen by some centrists in the party as putting too much emphasis on immigration,
while those on the left blamed him for agreeing to the deal without a DACA win.
"Now there is a real pathway to get a bill on the floor and through the Senate," Schumer
said of legislation to halt any deportation efforts aimed at the younger immigrants.
Ezra Levin, the co-executive director of the activist group Indivisible, told Politico
that Schumers job was to keep his caucus together and he didnt do it.
Cristina Jimenez, the executive director of United We Dream, said the members of the group
are "outraged."
She added that senators who voted Monday in favor of the deal "are not resisting Trump,
they are enablers."
Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., told Politico, Schumer is "doing a great job under very difficult
circumstances."
Earlier, Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., told The Journal that Democrats did not have the
public's support during negotiations and were being blamed for the shutdown.
He said he believed Democrats overgamed the gridlock.
I think they gambled and didnt win.
Nobody wins when the government shuts down, he said.
The Wall Street Journal, in an editorial titled, Chuck Schumer, Shut Down, wrote that
the New York Democrat exposed his colleauges running for re-election in "Trump states"
to placate his progressive base, and then he caved on the shutdown and ended up with
the approval of neither.

Opioid commission member says group's work is a 'sham' - Duration: 1:43.
Opioid commission member says group's work is a 'sham'
A member of President Trump's opioid commission said he believes the group's work is a "sham."
Former Democratic Rep. Patrick Kennedy (R.I.) told CNN that its members are "willing to
tolerate the intolerable -- and not do anything about it."
"I'm as cynical as I've ever been about this stuff," he said.
Earlier this month, the administration extended the opioid public health emergency issued
by Trump days before the declaration was set to expire.
Last October, Trump announced he was declaring the opioid epidemic a national public health
emergency.
The move was without precedent, as such declarations had in the past been reserved for natural
disasters and the outbreaks of infectious diseases.
Kennedy called the administration's efforts to address the epidemic are "tantamount to
reshuffling chairs on the Titanic."
"The emergency declaration has accomplished little because there's no funding behind it.
You can't expect to stem the tide of a public health crisis that is claiming over 64,000
lives per year without putting your money where your mouth is," he said.
He said he thinks the group's work is a "charade."
"It means nothing if it has no funding to push it forward.
... In the context of this tax bill, this thing's a charade," he said, referring to
the GOP tax bill.
"I have to be true to the way I feel: This is essentially a sham."
He also accused Trump of "playing politics instead of pursuing solutions for issues that
impact the lives of Americans."
"For people and families struggling with addiction in this epidemic," he said, "it's essentially
been a government shutdown from the start."
