A Malaysian in Germany: Purdue Offers Something for Everyone - Duration: 2:09.

When it comes to engineering, you actually do something that,

you get to move the world forward, you know?

Yeah, that's why I really like engineering.

A lot of students in Malaysia, actually, we tend to go to the UK.

But I actually wanted to try something different, you know? Just,

I don't want to do what everyone else is doing. I was like,

all right, Purdue it is! And here I am!

As an international student, it's not very easy getting, like, an internship, maybe, in the US.

I know Purdue offers a lot of programs for their students,

and I found out about GEARE.

And I thought, you know, I've always wanted to study in Europe and see how it was like.

So I thought it would be very cool to just go to Germany.

I started taking German classes, because that's a requirement of the program.

And I realized I really liked German. Still learning it today!

And that's why I went, just to expand my horizons.

I mean, I really came this far, I might as well just go a bit further!

The work experience was at the Max Planck Institute. My task was to

help out with research on bio fuel.

Learning to interact with people, like, working together with people in different cultures.

So I might have been in Germany, but they've got a guy from Egypt, a guy from Iran,

a guy from China. It's just, like, crazy.

So you need to know, like, depending on who you are talking to,

how you can carry yourself.

The most important thing is, it's about your soft skills, you know.

It's how you communicate with people. It's how you present yourself.

And it's how you build professional ethics. That's also important.

Those things are what employers really look for. That's something I don't think I could ever get from a class.

When you're in college, that's when you have, like, the freedom, you know?

I grew so much as a person, you know, just because of all the opportunities here.

I used to be a very shy person. I mean,

Yeah, I used to be, like, quite an introvert. But now, like just

because of all the experience I've had, I'm very comfortable talking about my experiences.

I just want to try new things, you know?

You have so many opportunities, I think, and Purdue does a great job of

giving students that opportunity, even international students.

People can say what they want, but if you actually have a will, there's definitely a way.

I've spent four years here at Purdue, and I've enjoyed every moment of it.

Right now I want to apply what I've learned into the real world and like,

try to make my own contributions to society: to Malaysian society, to the society of the world!

Trump signs bill ending government shutdown after 3 days

The federal government will be open for business Tuesday after President Trump signed a bill

funding the government until Feb. 8.

Trump signed the measure Monday evening, hours after the House and Senate approved the package

by wide margins as Senate Democrats backed off their opposition.

Democrats agreed to re-open the government after Republicans assured them the Senate

would soon consider legislation that would protect illegal immigrants brought to the

United States as children.

It was a stark contrast from the Senate Democratic position just a few days ago.

�In a few hours, the government will reopen,� Senate Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer,

a New York Democrat, said on the Senate floor on Monday.

The Senate then voted 81-18 to break a Democratic filibuster on the stalled government spending

bill.

Several hours later, the Senate approved the bill by the same margin and the House followed

suit, 266-150.

"I am pleased that Democrats in Congress have come to their senses and are now willing to

fund our great military, border patrol, first responders and insurance for vulnerable children,�

Trump said in a written statement.

During Monday�s press briefing, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said the administration

expects the bill to make it to the president�s desk late Monday and the government to open

at full capacity on Tuesday morning.

Sanders pushed back against the notion from Democrats that Trump wasn't doing enough behind

the scenes during the shutdown.

She said Trump was busy working the phones with lawmakers and Cabinet officials.

�The president was putting pressure and standing firm on exactly what he was willing

to do and what he wasn't,� Sanders said.

�And it very clearly worked.� The funding and reopening of the government

would allow U.S. military personnel to be paid, end the furlough of nearly 1 million

federal workers and resume all federal services and operations.

But congressional lawmakers made it clear Monday that they�re still faced with challenges,

like how to fund hurricane disaster relief and craft a comprehensive immigration reform

bill on which both parties can agree.

�We still have a lot more work to do,� said Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa

After days and weeks of blaming and finger-pointing, a bipartisan group of senators met Sunday

and brokered the deal in which rank-and-file members would provide the 60 votes in exchange

for Senate leaders' promise to immediately proceed to immigration reform.

Tsunami warnings canceled after magnitude-7.9 earthquake off Alaska

Forecasters canceled tsunami warnings for Alaska and the US and Canadian west coasts

Tuesday after an earthquake in the Gulf of Alaska stoked fears of damaging waves.

The tsunami alerts were canceled "because additional information and analysis have better

defined the threat," said the National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska.

Small tsunami waves of less than 1 foot were reported in Alaska, the center said.

The minor tsunami was triggered by a magnitude-7.9 earthquake that struck the Gulf of Alaska

shortly after midnight.

It was centered about 175 miles southeast of Kodiak, Alaska, at a depth of 15 miles,

the US Geological Survey said.

Although the tsunami warnings were canceled, San Francisco officials warned residents to

stay away from coastlines for 12 hours.

Shoreline areas, marinas and harbors may have "dangerous, strong & unpredictable currents,"

the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management tweeted.

Nathaniel Moore was on a commercial fishing boat in Kodiak when the quake hit.

He said he felt it "shake really good for a minute."

He and others on the vessel quickly got to shore and headed for higher ground amid the

tsunami warning.

The whole town is evacuating," he told CNN early Tuesday.

Tsunami sirens sounded in Kodiak, and police warned: "This is not a drill."

Though the tsunami warnings were canceled, schools in Kodiak canceled classes Tuesday

after campuses opened overnight as emergency shelters, the district announced via Facebook.

Wendy Bliss Snipes described the quake as "a slow roller, so it was felt for at least

a minute before the real rolling started.

Nothing fell off the walls, and I didn't have to wake my kiddo."

Heather Rand, who was in Anchorage, Alaska, told CNN that the earthquake felt like the

longest she had ever experienced.

"It was a very long, slow build up.

Creepy, more than anything.

Definitely the longest, and I was born here," Rand said.

She reported no damage besides cracks in the drywall.

Neil Diamond has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, the singer revealed on his website

Monday.

The legendary musician will be retiring, and has canceled the third leg of this 50th Anniversary

tour.

�It is with great reluctance and disappointment that I announce my retirement from concert

touring.

I have been so honored to bring my shows to the public for the past 50 years,� said

Diamond in a statement, apologizing to those who had purchased tickets to upcoming shows.

The tour was set to extend to Australia and New Zealand this March, but the musician's

website stated that "the onset of the disease has made it difficult to travel and perform

on a large scale basis."

Tickets purchased will be refunded.

Diamond will turn 77 on Wednesday, and the Recording Academy will honor him with its

Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammys on Sunday.

Fans got to see him perform last month on Fox's New Year�s Eve With Steve Harvey:

Diamond�s 50th Anniversary tour launched last April and carried on for over 50 dates

across the U.S. and Europe.

Mexican Uber driver in US illegally charged with four rapes

A California Uber driver living in the country illegally has been charged with raping, assaulting

and robbing at least four young women.

Alfonso Alarcon-Nunez, 39, faces 10 criminal charges, including forcible rape, rape of

an intoxicated victim, oral copulation of an intoxicated victim and first degree burglary.

He pleaded not guilty to all 10 counts Monday and was being held on $1.4 million bail.

San Luis Obispo County District Attorney Dan Dow said Alarcon-Nunez was not always driving

for Uber when he picked up those women but added that the alleged crimes show that the

company should improve its driver screening process.

Prosecutors say Alarcon-Nunez targeted women who were on their way home from parties.

After driving them home, investigators say he would assault the women and steal their

property -- including cell phones and jewelry.

Authorities told KSBY that Alarcon-Nunez would collect payment for the rides through Venmo

to disguise his identity and his Uber records.

Prosecutors say he has also used the alias "Bruno Diaz" and his Venmo username was "Brush

Bat."

Dow said Monday that Alarcon-Nunez's alleged victims are between 19 and 22 years old and

three were intoxicated when they were assaulted.

The alleged crimes are said to have occurred in December and January in San Luis Obispo,

a city of about 45,000 with a large population of college students.

Predators in cars parked outside bars or restaurants "jump in front of the actual Uber driver and

they will take someone unsuspecting to their home.

And that's a way of putting someone at risk, and in this case that's exactly what's alleged

to have happened," Dow said.

Dow urged Uber users to make sure they are getting in the car of the correct driver by

verifying the license plate and other information provided to clients.

Dow says detectives are looking for potential witnesses and trying to determine if there

are additional victims in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties northwest of Los

Angeles.

Officials say Alarcon-Nunez, originally from Mexico, returned to the U.S. illegally after

a voluntary deportation from New Mexico in 2005.

Dow did not have details about why he was deported or whether he has a criminal record

in the U.S.

Alarcon-Nunez's immigration status will not have a bearing on the prosecution, Dow said.

He could face life in prison if convicted on all charges.

Hugh Masekela, South African jazz trumpeter, dies

Legendary jazz trumpeter Hugh Masekela, a leading figure in the struggle to end apartheid

and "the father of South African jazz", has died aged 78.

In a statement, his family said he had "passed peacefully" in Johannesburg "after a protracted

and courageous battle with prostate cancer".

Masekela gained global recognition with his distinctive Afro-Jazz sound and hits such

as Soweto Blues.

The 1977 song became synonymous with the anti-apartheid movement.

In a statement, South African President Jacob Zuma said Masekela's death was "an immeasurable

loss to the music industry and to the country at large".

Zuma continued: "His contribution to the struggle for liberation will never be forgotten."

Born in the South African town of Witbank in 1939, Masekela was inspired to learn the

trumpet after seeing Kirk Douglas play Bix Beiderbecke in the 1950 film Young Man with

a Horn.

He persuaded one of his teachers - the anti-apartheid crusader Father Trevor Huddleston - to buy

him an instrument, promising to stay out of trouble in return.

In 1960, aged 21, he left South Africa to begin what would be 30 years in exile from

the land of his birth.

Under the tutelage of Dizzy Gillespie and Louis Armstrong, he was encouraged to develop

his own unique style.

In 1967, he performed at the Monterey Pop Festival alongside Janis Joplin, Otis Redding,

Ravi Shankar, The Who and Jimi Hendrix.

The following year, his instrumental single Grazing in the Grass topped the charts in

the US and became a worldwide hit.

Details of memorial and burial services, the family said, would be released "in due course".

Late Friday, our government was thrust into what's being called the "Schumer Shutdown"

after Democrats put the interest of illegals before the well-being of Americans.

In a shocking twist, Democrats just got ripped apart by former President Barack Obama in

a clip that just recently resurfaced.

Unfortunately for them, it all centers around their part in the government shutdown — but

there's one huge catch you have to see to believe.

Democrats are catching hell from all sides.

With even the liberal media and their own base saying the government shutdown is completely

and entirely the fault of Democratic lawmakers, it's kind of hard to argue otherwise.

Sadly, it doesn't look like there is an end in sight at this point in time.

Be that as it may, things just got a lot worse for the left after a clip of former President

Barack Obama just resurfaced.

As it turns out, the former president ripped into the government shutdown, but there's

actually a huge catch — the clip is from 2013 when he was scolding Republicans for

the government shutdown during his presidency, but it certainly applies to the current situation

today and what the Democrats are doing.

As BizPac Review reports, "Obama's speech from the 2013 shutdown drops a nuke on the

Even better yet, it hits on the same exact topics that are relevant to today's events

such as immigration reform.

However, the biggest problem for the left is that everything he yelled at Republicans

for back then applies directly to Democrats today.

"You don't like a particular policy or a

particular president?

Then argue for your position.

Go out there and win an election.

Push to change it.

But don't break it," Obama said in his remarks on October 17, 2013, after Congress

reached a deal to reopen the government, The Daily Caller reports.

"Don't break what our predecessors spent over two centuries building.

That's not being faithful to what this country's about," the former president added at the

time.

"Now, there's been a lot of discussion lately of the politics of this shutdown,"

Obama continued.

"But let's be clear.

There are no winners here.

These last few weeks have inflicted completely unnecessary damage on our economy."

Essentially, Obama had a clear message to Republicans: "I won.

Get over it," basically telling members of the political right that the things were

going to go the way he wanted because he was president.

What's more, this was actually the second time he had made similar remarks.

Previously, in 2010, he smugly told Senator John McCain that "the election is over."

Now that the shoe is on the other foot, we've all seen how well this same sentiment is going

over for President Donald Trump.

Furthermore, how do you think Democrats would react if Trump told them that he won the election

and that they better get over it and do things according to his wishes?

What do you think the liberals of America would do?

I think we'd see riots — again.

Indeed, there would be yet another national hissy fit, and this really just goes to show

the hypocrisy of the left.

Not only do these people expect and demand things to go a certain way when they're

in charge, but they do the same things they accused Republicans of when the situation

was reversed.

Currently, Democrats aren't looking too good considering the fact that nearly everyone

is blaming them for what happened.

Making matters worse for them, when you show exactly how you would like to be treated when

in a position of authority only to turn around and do exactly what you once condemned, well,

that isn't a good color on anyone.

The left has some serious self-reflecting to do, but the main thing here is that former

President Barack Obama eventually got what he wanted out of the government shutdown standoff.

My guess is, President Donald Trump will too — it's just a shame that the hypocritical

left has to hold this country hostage while they try to make a point.

What a sad day for America.

Luckily, we can change all that with midterm elections fastly approaching this year.

It's time America tells the Democrats, "Never again will you put illegals before those you

are supposed to serve" — because they won't be serving, they'll be voted out!
