We consider the task of guiding a drone to a landing spot after it returns from

an autonomous mission.

To accomplish this,

we propose an intuitive human-robot interaction interface,

that is based on pointing gestures.

We use point-to-target interaction pattern to control the drone.

At the beginning,

the user points at the drone to select it

and then points again

to move it at the desired location.

The interface consists of two wearable sensors

placed on the upper arm and forearm.

Each sensor contains a 9 degrees of freedom (DoF)

inertial measurement unit (IMU).

The devices stream their absolute orientations via

the Bluetooth link to a host PC

with a 50 Hertz rate.

On the host PC

we perform a model constraint arm pose reconstruction

that allows us to estimate the pointed locations

with respect to the user.

This interaction pattern also requires the system to detect the events of pointing.

To achieve this, we trained a 1-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN)

that returns the probability of the current state of the arm being a pointing gesture.

To start the interaction, the user has to stand behind the drone

and point at it.

This way, we partially localise the interacting agents by

fixing their relative heading.

Using the pointing vector obtained from the wearable sensors,

we then complete the localisation by estimating the distance to the robot.

Once the drone is selected, it jumps in the air

to communicate its state to the user.

From that moment, the drone continuously moves to pointed the location

and hovers there.

Finally, to land the drone, the user has to keep

pointing at the same location for approximately 3 seconds.

During the countdown,

the user receives regular vibration feedback on the upper arm device.

If the user is not happy with the chosen landing spot,

he can correct it before the timer sets off.

Otherwise, the drone will perform the landing.

To verify the efficiency of our pointing based interface

we conducted a preliminary user study

where we compared our interface with a conventional joypad controller.

We recruited five subjects to perform the landing task

and measured the time-to-target and Euclidean distance error.

We found that our interface performed better

in terms of time necessary to reach the target.

The following animation shows collated trajectories of the drone

controlled by each of the subjects using the joystick interface (in blue)

and the pointing interface (in green).

The popping dots show the moments the drone is

commanded to land.

It is clear that the use of the pointing-based interface

results in smoother trajectories and smaller times to target.

One of the key differences between the interfaces that led to these results

is the type of control.

While the pointing-based interface allows the user to directly control the drone position,

the joystick-like interfaces control the velocity,

which is less natural to use.

Major retailers around the nation have become battle grounds for political correctness,

using their businesses as soap boxes to make social statements.

In a time when online business has disrupted the retail market and big box stores are diminishing

by the dozen, it doesn't seem wise to polarize your customer base with a divisive stance

– as Target seems to have learned the hard way.

However, Lowe's is not one of these stores and simply stays true to their core values

and the American people.

We saw this from the major home improvement retailer a couple of months ago when they

went against the trend of catering to Islam with what they pulled from their stores.

Now, we're seeing it again in an even bigger way that proves there is a positive way to

make a statement and it's left military families in America in total shock.

What many American businesses, sports figures, and celebrities get routinely wrong is that

they make political statements in vain to say they are against division, when they are

really being an anti-American and perpetuating the problem.

This often includes using their platform to publicly trash our president.

Lowes knows that while they may offend "some" people, they are promoting something better

with their patriotism that we as a country can and should all get behind.

In this recent move, they are showing their appreciation in a big way for the men and

women who fight for our freedom and right to make any social statement we want, with

what's coming to all their stores across the nation for military families.

Conservative Post reports: Lowe's is an American company that has made

it known in the past that they are proud to be a part of this great nation.

They have continually shown their support for our military, and now they have made an

announcement that will help those in our military as well as their families.

The company will be changing their military discount program in order to improve it for

those defending our country.

They will be expanding the program to include more members of the military as well as their

family members.

I think we can all agree that those who put their lives aside to defend our freedom deserve

everything they can possibly get.

This discount is more generous than most and goes beyond just brick and mortar stores.

All military members and their families will be able to use it online and will receive

free shipping as well.

"The discount is linked to a MyLowes account, which can be shared by a household.

Once the service member signs up for the discount program, it will be linked to a MyLowes card

that can also be used by their spouse," Lowe's spokeswoman Megan Lewis explained.

Even more impressive, is that Lowe's isn't going to make the process complicated to get

the discount as is often the case with having to constantly show identification.

"Lowe's has explained that they will not be asking for proof of ID anymore because

they feel that it makes the process more complicated for the military members.

This program change should help both military members and their families all over the country,"

Conservative Post reported.

"We are proud to have a company like Lowe's looking out for our military members.

After all, they put their lives on the line for all of us.

The least we can do is get them some good discounts and make their lives a little easier."

To those who don't value the sacrifice of our service members or recognize that these

heroes are the backbone of our country, they probably think this is somehow unfair.

They are probably also the same disgruntled people who took their business elsewhere after

Lowe's proudly pulled their ads from appearing in the commercial spots during the All American

Muslim show on the TLC network.

Lowe's probably lost far fewer customers than they gained from that move and aren't

missing them.

Business is booming for those who choose to respect our country and the values this nation

was built on, which is how it should be.

The same can't be said for companies who continue to cater to the liberal agenda.

The country needs to see more of this and likely will within the next four years under

President Donald Trump's leadership.

He constantly praises our military which is how it always should be.

American businesses should look at how Lowe's treats our military members and follow their

lead.

It's beyond time for this to be the trend as opposed to who can make a bigger anti-American

social justice statement.

Well done, Lowe's!
