in this video we wanted to shed light on a profession that we all heavily rely on
these days especially people like Harry and myself who have no idea how to code
but manage to create online businesses so we praise the coders that walk among
us one of whom is this guy meet David he's originally from Columbia
and after learning the language of coding and the global language of
English he decided to take on the American Dream by coding for a tech
giant and as he is a non-native English speaker living in an English world we
thought it would be interesting for you to see what his life is like now that he
has reached fluency and is doing what he loves so let's get stuck in okay all right
so what do you do David what do I do
yeah that's a good question I'm a software developer for a tech company
in Seattle do you like it I love it yeah I love it this is probably no this is not the
first time this is the second time that I've loved the job that I've had
how long have you been doing it
I've been doing this for three years now next week is gunna be my third anniversary and what
and what led you to your to your work these things the developing days I don't know
it was all so fast that I didn't even like have time to feel it and like to
think through it I was back at home and suddenly I received an email saying okay
like hey this company is recruiting so if you want to come and find out why not
did you ever think you would be in an english-speaking job in a
in an English country the first part yes I was only that like even in Colombia I
was working for many other companies and my managers were from the US like at
least two of them yeah so I was like working in English and doing things in
English even though back then the level of English that I had was not as like
as decent as it is now yeah I had to like definitely improve when I knew that I
was going to come to the u.s. yeah okay so what is a day like in your life now
you get to work anytime anytime you like anytime really as long as you are good at the
things that you are doing and you're responsible and you are like complying
with deadlines and stuff you can do anything you want like nice within
reason yeah of course within reason okay that's nice so I am kind of like an
earlybird I like getting there around 8 a.m.
okay which for most most of the people like are crazy they're like what is wrong with
you you don't like sleeping because they get there like 9, 10, 11 yeah 8 o'clock is
early is it is it quite a stressful day no that's what I wanna know no it's not stressful
at all you enjoy it yeah I love really and then
what you there till midnight
it depends there are like if if it is summer in Seattle
4 p.m. so I can go like out of work and do something ok
if it is not summer 5 p.m. 6 p.m. if I have way too much work and you can
always work from home if you want to are you that type of person that is
exceedingly geeky with code though and you just love to code I don't think so
I I love coding but in the future I would like to have something more like
management kind of thing okay so yeah
so that's a day in a life of
David yeah what is the thing that you like about your life particularly I
want to say the opportunity of being in a different country like getting to meet
different people getting to know a different culture yeah I I now really like
that okay and yeah I I love Seattle this is my second home now right as soon as I
got as soon as I arrived in Seattle I was like I hate this I want to go home
oh really but now I've learned to appreciate it and to feel proud of the
city and to feel proud of the state so yeah this opportunity is probably the
best thing that I have now nice and if you weren't a developer what would you like
to be and why I would like to work probably I would go with two options
first one would be marketing marketing yeah I really like coming up with like
new ideas and like how things could be improved and how we get how we can get to
market like to specific audiences and stuff I I love doing that yeah and then
the second one would be medicine I would like to help people in people's lives
wow that'd be really cool yeah that'd be stressful do you think it would be
more stressful than being a developer
oh yeah yeah yeah although when push comes to shove and
there's a bug in the system okay do you feel like your neck is on the line no no
no because one of the things that my team that my team has is that we are
indeed a team okay so if something fails all of us are going to try and fix it
somehow so you never feel like you are the only one who's failed and who has to
go and like make things better right that doesn't happen
okay so it's a team spirit yeah not teen team team team good good song teen spirit
did you listen to it much yeah
I think that was the first song that I I learnt to drum thank you for making this about you now
yeah nice yeah I was in a band oh cool yeah no one asked and the band name was Lizzy & The Walking Boys
that's a horrible name isn't it isn't it terrible and I was sitting
drumming okay so I wasn't doing much walking nice
anyway so that's a wrap I think is it
Mr. Colombia I am not Mr. Colombia thank you very much you are welcome yeah cheers
