What is fracking?

How to make a DIY mask for a Minecraft costume - ep04 - Roland Master Maker - Duration: 15:53.

In this episode I'll be making a face mask with a hydraulic opening inspired by the videogame

Minecraft.

I'll be using simple materials and custom prints by Roland.

Hi folks, I'm Custom Cez and I welcome you to this new episode of Roland Master Maker,

the web series where I'll document a number of custom projects hoping to inspire you to

do some amazing things in your own home.

During the process I'll show you some of the incredible machines that Roland has to

offer.

Today I'll be making the face mask for a Steve cosplay or Halloween costume, the main

character from the game Minecraft.

The face mask will also have an Hydraulic front opening to make it more fun.

All the things needed for this build can be found at a pharmacy, like the syringes and

the tongue depressants, and in good hardware store.

I take a polycarbonate panel measuring 130 by 100 centimeters, 6 millimeters thick.

I need to draw the shape necessary to build Steve's head, luckily for us it's shaped

like a simple cube.

To draw the details, like the front opening and the eyes, I like to use a caliper because

once you set it to a certain measurement it can be used to mark many points.

As I've mentioned the polycarbonate panel is 6 mm thick.

In order to bend it I need to remove a strip of material from one of the two sides along

each of the bends.

These cuts are drawn with a red marker.

The drawing is done, I can now go ahead with the cuts.

This can be a dangerous job so make sure you do it safely, younger kids need to be assisted

by an adult.

I use a steel square to help guide the blade and make clean, straight cut.

When the cut is parallel to the polycarbonate internal support ridge, cutting is quite easy.

On the other hand, when the cut is perpendicular to it, like in the case of this eye hole,

it can be a bit harder to do.

As you can see trying to cut across each ridge seems to be a good way to go.

Once I've cut the hole for the head on the panel I can start removing the excess polycarbonate.

I then make sure the front opening is free to move…

I open the eye holes…

And the head hole.

The last step in the preparation of the panel is making the incisions for the bends.

I have to make sure I cut only one side of the panel.

After the incisions are made, I need to remove the strip of material between the two cuts.

As you can see the other side of the panel is left untouched.

This allows me to bend the material and at the same time to keep all the sections of

the cube together.

I proceed with performing all the other incisions

The structure of the cube is ready for the glue gun.

I begin hot gluing its corners from the inside.

The bend comes out nice and sturdy… so I can continue gluing all the other corners.

To close the last side of the cube I have to shorten a bit the last panel section, but that's ok

The box is ready, now let's tackle the function side of the project.

I want the front section to slide up.

To do it I'm going to use a hydraulic system made with syringes.

So, first thing I need are the actual syringes, four in total.

These are the biggest ones I've found.

Since I'm going to use them as a linear actuator, their length will determine the

amount of travel the front section will be able to do.

I've discarded the needles, I don't need them.

I place the first syringe inside the box along the vertical side of the opening and mark

the location of the needle hub on the bottom of the box.

Using a drill I make a hole that will allow the entire hub to protrude from the bottom

of the box.

I drill another two holes that will allow a zip tie to secure the syringe onto the box.

I do the same for the other syringe on the opposite side of the opening.

The tongue depressor has to be now cut in half.

I hot glue one piece of tongue depressor to each of the plungers, with one side going

towards the opening.

It needs to be close to the side wall but free to move, so I'm careful with the glue.

It goes like this!

I can now use a liberal amount of glue to weld the other extremity of the depressor

to the sliding panel.

First one side… then the other.

Now let's build the "propulsion" system.

I need two plastic hoses, they need to be able to fit onto the syringe's hub.

Once inserted, I can secure them with a couple of zip ties.

Then the syringes are glued and zip tied together.

I use another piece of tongue depressor to pair up the two plungers so that they will

be forced to travel together... and this is the result.

Now I can fit the other sides of the hoses to the syringes in the Minecraft helmet...

And there you go, push the plungers and the door slides open… pull the plungers and

door slides shut.

Very nice!

The only problem right now is that it looks like a box, a cool box, but just a box none

the less.

To make it look like our friend Steve from Minecraft we are gonna need a bit of Roland

Magic!

Did you recognize me?

I'm wearing my minecraft mask, but it wouldn't be a proper Minecraft mask until it has Steve's

face on it and we are here at Roland just to do that.

We are going to use that machine to print and cut vinyl sheeting which will become some

sort of Steve skin which will stick onto our mask.

So let's get to it.

I'll use a printing and cutting plotter, the Roland TrueVIS, to turn a self adhesive

vinyl sheet into a Steve skin that will give a much needed realistic touch to the

Minecraft mask.

The Roland TrueVIS begins printing the design that I have prepared in my studio at very

high definition onto the vinyl.

Remember that the design is available for download on our facebook page, just follow

the link in the description.

This plotter model can print up to 160 cm wide so it's perfect for my project.

This type of technology is usually used to create those prints and wraps that you see

on buses and store fronts, but I think that our purpose for using it is much more fun.

In less than 10 minutes the print is ready, but it's not done.

Now the Roland TrueVIS starts to cut the contour of the print using a precision blade that

moves across the vinyl just like the printer head.

The feed rolls move the sheet back and forth positioning the cutting blade in the right

spot.

In no time at all all the cuts are done.

Since I was at the Roland headquarters I couldn't pass the opportunity to make a few other items

inspired by the video game for my son.

He is a big fan!

In less than half an hour I've managed to personalize: a plastic folder for all his

drawings, using a Versa UV printer…

A nice pillow for his bedroom...

And a pencil case.

Now that the vinyl sheet is ready, printed and cut, let's go and transform my simple

box in a proper Minecraft helmet mask!

Now that I've got everything I need to complete the Minecraft helmet mask it's time to get

to work.

The plotter was programmed to cut only the vinyl sheet and not the support paper.

So, armed with a pair of scissors, I remove the excess paper.

Here you can see the very fine cut made by the plotter.

In order to simplify the process of sticking it to the box, I temporarily cover the cuts

with painter's tape so to avoid deformations during the application process.

On the blue prints, available for download, I've included a drawing that specifies the

order in which the panels have to be attached to the box.

To do so I need to separate the paper back of each different section of the vinyl sheet,

otherwise, if removed all at once, we would risk it sticking to itself.

Let's start with the first face, the front one.

This is a very delicate step in the build.

The positioning of the first face will influence all other face.

Once the vinyl is in place I need to remove the air bubbles between the box and the cover.

You can use your fingers or a little plastic spatula.

After the first face the rest of them are a breeze.

The next one is the top face…

and it's little flaps.

The bottom face is next, but I need to make two little holes to allow the syringes to

go through the vinyl.

Then I use a blade to adapt the sheeting to the head hole.

Now I can apply the adhesive to the back side...

and the flaps.

And last the two sides.

They'll cover all the little flaps from the previous faces and we'll end up with

a nice and clean coverage of the entire box.

The painter's tape can be removed at this time, as well as the last air bubbles and

I can do a first test.

It looks good.

For the kid to be able to wear the mask I got a bicycle helmet.

To make it fit inside the mask I'm going to use some polystyrene…

I cut it to size…

And I glue it to the helmet.

Now I have four suitable points I can glue to the box: the top, the back and the two

sides.

With a bit of patience I manage to glue the helmet to the box, so now I can permanently

attach the hoses to the syringes using glue… and zip ties.

This is the moment of truth!

My son Dylan is gonna be the guinea pig.

The bike helmet seems comfortable and secured to his head.

The opening system works like a charm and I'm sure that this Minecraft helmet mask

will be very popular at his next costume party.

The mask can even be placed over a lamp so that it can double as a night light.
