Has urged China to work very hard to persuade North Korea to end its nuclear program
Donald Trump was meeting President Xi Jingping on the third leg of his Asia tour
He also said he didn't blame Beijing for the trade imbalance between the two countries
It's a marked contrast to his past comments when Trump has criticized China on both fronts Caitlin McGee reports
There's been no shortage of pomp and ceremony on this trip and according to both leaders many common interests
Involved China and the United States being two large countries share more common interests share a greater
responsibility and enjoy broader room for cooperation
least trade was one of trumps big cards to play he wanted to lean on China for a more balanced trade relationship and
Outlined steps to try and reverse a big trade deficit this includes
addressing China's market access restrictions and technology transfer
requirements which prevent American companies from being able to
fairly
Compete within China the two sides have managed to sign
250 billion dollars worth of deals they held it a success
But critics say the deals are also and will take years to materialize
The big issue hanging over this trip though is the security threat from North Korea?
Trump has been trading barbs with Kim jong-un and believes. The onus is on China to isolate and pressure, Pyongyang
China can fix this problem easily and quickly and I am calling on China and your great president
to
Hopefully work on it very hard China wants more dialogue and Trump seemed a little more open to talks
Beijing and Washington at least agree that the Korean Peninsula should be nuclear free
It's awesome band also on the Korean Peninsula a nuclear issue we reiterated the firm commitment to achieving
denuclearization of the peninsula and upholding the international non-proliferation regime
There was no talk of one of the regional issues Trump's predecessor Barack Obama pushed to resolve
territorial disputes in the South China Sea
China's Asian neighbors are concerned about Beijing's territorial claims their
Size agreed to contain differences and to which
substantial agreements in this area
The knick stop for both leaders as Vietnam for the APEC summit, which Trump is likely to meet his Russian counterpart
Vladimir Putin Caitlin McGee
Let speak to Frank Asaro, who's in Washington DC now and Frank just how important it is mr.
Trump's visit for us-china relations and of course getting cooperation in dealing with North Korea
Well yes of course North Korea seems to be at the top of everybody's
List of what needs to be cooperation on and we have to remember that
The China is the main lifeline economically for North Korea
They have been along with the Russians a big stumbling point veto wise for the US when it comes to sanctions at the UN
Security Council so
That is that is topic number one
the Chinese really share an interest in in getting a
Deal with North Korea to stop their nuclear
Ambitions and their program because the Chinese do not want any kind of conflict because they realize that they're also called to go from North
Korea to China and they don't want that number one number two is mr. Trump
Also has to look at a broader cooperation with China you have to go back to like jalath this year
Huge tensions between the US and China we had two Chinese fighter jets buzzing a u.s.
reconnaissance plane over the East China Sea in July they came as close as 300 feet the Pentagon called it a near collision and
that kind of thing can lead to
miscalculation militarily wise so that's one of the other reasons why it's important that these two leaders meet and begin to
Cooperate because the South China Sea is a big political hot potato. It's not just between China and the u.s.. It's also between
Jeff Japan it's also between Vietnam both those other countries
Do not like the build-up of Chinese neighbor Navy rather in the South, China
Sea and also
China has been building up their presence on a lot of the smaller islands there the Spratly Islands remain in dispute in
That sea area
So you know that is one of these the things that is also being discussed on the sidelines here between the two leaders
And next stop for President Trump is Vietnam. It's being said that he may have a meeting with the Russians while he's there
What can you tell us about that?
Yeah overnight we were hearing from the Kremlin that they are now working to arrange a time in the sidelines of that that Asia
Summit that's going to take place in Danang and that's very important for the two of them to me because
What's coming up?
Back in the UN Security Council is another deadline for the the Jim
Panel which was investigating the use of chemical weapons in Syria their mandate will be up in a week
The Russians vetoed the last chance to extend that mandate in the UN Security Council the US was quite angry at that
And so mr.. Trump has to sit there with mr.. Putin and basically say okay
What are we going to do about Syria?
How are we going to handle of the rest of the investigations of a panel, which you helped create?
But now you're obstructing so that's going to be major on the sidelines for mr.. Trump and mr. Putin when they meet
Frank thank you very much indeed for that Frank is the other in washing
