>>> I'm Sandra Caballero and I'm the director of the Texas Tech Health
Science Center simulation center and I am also an assistant professor in the
accelerated program at the School of Nursing at Texas Tech. What we do here is
we help get them interested in how science works in the area of healthcare
and to watch our nursing ambassadors who are students here in the Texas Tech
Health Science program to be their role model and let them know what they do
here and how the Sun Life Center facilitates their learning.
>>> This sim lab
is an amazing opportunity because the girls not only get the science but they
also get the technology and engineering of this program.
>>> We got to go to
different stations here in the sim lab and we went to one where we learned
about CPR and we practiced on mannequins looking at taking blood pressure and we
talked about healthy hearts and healthy lungs and what healthy sounds like and
what not healthy sounds like.
>>> This program got started when we were approached by
some of the faculty here at the sim Life Center and they were interested in
getting Girl Scouts here and so we are giving them a lot more opportunities to
kind of get the hands-on experience through this program
>>> I think the hands-on is like pretty cool because
you get to do it yourself and when you
experience it yourself then you're like learning it better and it's like fun to
experience so I could kind of like relate more.
>>> My experience here today was wonderful.
Going through the whole different
rotations that we had was so much fun I learned so much and so it was just a fun
time of learning with a bunch of other girls.
>>> This program is really important that it's through Girl Scouts
so it gives girls an opportunity
to learn with their sister Girl Scouts and especially learn about STEM
opportunities to show that there are opportunities and that they're wide.
>>> The STEM program that the Girl Scouts are doing is very important for
the girls I think it enhances their interest their knowledge
it just helps them to realize that in this world that we live in today they're
going to need those type of things to succeed and to excel.
>>> When they come here
they see the stuff is interesting to me I can work hard and understand this sort
of stuff they are able to really understand what their capabilities are.
>>> Getting through experience like this it shows you know how important it is and
it shows that hey anyone can do it and it makes you feel like you can do anything.
