USA news on Youtube Nov 20 2017

Water is something that is absolutely essential for life, without it, life as we know would

not exist!

From drinking water in space, to its benefits on the brain.

I'm Jack with insane curiosity, and Here are 16 things you may not know about water!

1.

Drinking in space!

Nature's been recycling water on Earth for eons, and now NASA is set to do the same thing

above Earth on the International Space Station.

They have created a 'Water Recovery System'.

What this system does is recycle 93% of the waste liquid on the space station, and turns

it into clean drinking water.

…You're wondering what 'waste liquid' is?

Well it's perspiration and… urine.

It is filtered through two racks, fitted with a liquid distiller.

It may sound disgusting, but this is incredibly revolutionary system.

It enables the ISS to be self-sufficient, and ensure that it will never run out of clean

water, that they can use to wash and drink.

2.

Don't water your plants during the day!

This may sound a bit strange at first glance, but good gardeners know it to be true!

They often water plants out of the way of direct sunlight.

Why would they do this?

Well the small droplets of water that cling to the leaves of the plant can actually act

as little magnifying glasses.

They can focus rays of sunlight and actually cause plants to dehydrate, and possibly burn!

So next time you find yourself in your garden on a beautiful sunny day, don't water your

plants!

They'll end up worse off.

3.

Don't drink too much!

A lot of people say the recommended daily amount of water is 6-9 pints!

That can seem like a lot, and a sufficient amount of water is healthy.

However, too much can be just as bad!

Drinking significantly more water than you need is known as 'water intoxification'.

This can be dangerous, and (believe it or not) can lead to what is known as an edema,

which is 'observable swelling from fluid accumulation in body tissues'.

A lot of amateur marathon runners have actually met they're end through this type of overexposure

to water.

Be careful, don't drink too much water!

4.

Water water everywhere!

Water is absolutely everywhere!

There are over 300 million cubic miles of it on the earth's surface.

This is around 71% of the earth's surface.

Around 96.5% of the water on the earth is the water in the ocean.

What may surprise some is that less than one percent of earth's water is drinkable.

Even when you include bottled water.

This just shows how much water is on earth.

5.

Not so fresh!

Did you know that 'fresh' is actually a relative term?

It's scary but it's true!

Before 2009 some federal regulators did not even require water bottlers to remove E. coli

from their batches.

This is a scary prospect, but thankfully federal regulations have since tightened up surrounding

the safety of fresh water regulation.

6.

Full of hot water!

We all know that water is of a major importance; some organisms are made up of 90% water.

When it comes to humans, up to 60% of the adult body is water.

According to the Journal of Biological Chemistry, the brain and heart are composed of 73% water,

and the lungs are about 83% water.

Even your bones are 31% water!

It really is absolutely everywhere!

7.

Hot water freezes faster than cold water

Unbelievable right, but it is proven that hot water actually freezes faster than cold

water does!

The Mpemba effect was named after a Tanzanian student, one day in 1963, he realised that

hot ice cream freezes faster than cold ice cream.

It was actually Aristotle that first observed this effect in the 4th century BC, then later

Francis Bacon and René Descartes.

Mpemba published a paper on his findings in 1969.

8.

The power of Niagra Falls

Niagara Falls straddles the border between the USA and Canada, it is an extremely popular

tourist attraction.

Bringing in millions of visitors a year, that come to behold it's beauty and vastness.

It is also extremely dangerous, there are quite a number of accidents, and strict security

measures at the site.

And there is a reason for this, 3,160 tons of water flows over Niagara Falls every second.

The water falls at 32 feet per second over the Falls.

This means that Niagara Falls has the power and flow rate that can fill 4000 bathtubs

with water every single second.

It is, so so powerful!

9.

The unfortunate truth

According to the Washington Post, one flush of a toilet uses more water than most people

in the poor parts of Africa have for an entire day!

That includes, cooking, washing, drinking and everything!

This is unfortunate, but goes to indicate to you the struggle that a lot of people go

through in terms of water and nutrition.

10.

Water promotes Weight Loss!

Water should be the secret weapon of anyone hoping to loss weight.

It is scientifically proven to reduce your hunger and actually raise your metabolism.

Training your body to distribute nutrients and expel waste can be the first step to you

achieving the weight loss you want.

A good tip is to swap out the soft drinks and fruit juices you drink with water!

You'd be extracting so much sugar from your diet!

11.

Your morning coffee counts!

Struggling to fit in all of those pints of water a day?

Well we've got good news for you, your morning coffee can count towards your overall daily

hydration.

The University of Birmingham conducted a study that concluded that; if you drink coffee regularly,

that the caffeine content in coffee does not act has a dehydrating agent.

However if you don't drink coffee regularly, it can draw water out of the body.

So if you're a coffee drinker, than it's counting towards your water count!

12.

More bad news

The UN estimates that around 47% of the earth's population will be living in areas of high

water stress in 2030.

This means they'll live in an area with no water, or too much.

Water shortages are a definite issue for the near future.

13.

Benefits on the brain

Water can be immensely beneficial for the brain.

It is scientifically proven that when someone is dehydrated, the grey matter of their brain

actually shrinks.

Lack of water causes a number of symptoms such as problems with focus (blurring), memory

problems, mental fatigue, headaches, sleep problems, anger, depression.

But don't fret, if you keep hydrated you're giving your brain every chance to function

properly!

14.

Turn the tap off!

Can you hear your taps dripping from the bathroom?

Are you too lazy to get up and make sure they're off?

Well let me tell you something that make shock you into it.

A dripping tap may seem like nothing, but if left on for a whole day, it can actually

waste up to 75 litres of water!

Think about those in the world that aren't as fortunate as you and don't have running

water, and are forced to live on stagnant and potentially dangerous water!

Feeling a bit more inclined to turn off that tap now?

I thought so!

15.

WATER NOT FIZZY DRINKS

Do you feel refreshed after downing an ice cold can of coca-cola, Fanta or some such

fizzy drink?

Well you may be fooling yourself there.

Because for every 6oz of caffeine your consume, nearly double the amount of water is needed

to rehydrate your body back to its original state.

If you're thirsty drink water, please!

16.

Hydration is so important!

Not drinking enough water to enable you to remain hydrated has been linked to colon,

breast and urinary tract cancers.

This means cancers in the kidney, bladder and testicles.

Water is your number 1 priority in terms of nutrition, that is why there is always such

a push for you to drink enough.

Hydration and allows the immune system cells to reach damaged tissues in greater numbers.

We're feeling pretty parched after that list!
