Hey, what's up guys back again with another video so in today's video. We are going to take a look at an official

Sinclair spectrum clone that was released in the US.

This is the Timex TS2068 Sinclair home computer

The Sinclair ZX Spectrum is over 35 years old

It's the machine that defined the term "bedroom coder" and in the UK it started a revolution

Now we all know about this machine - Rubber keys, Clive Sinclair, color clash and all that stuff.

But with over 5 million units sold,

Its place in history is confirmed and its legacy lives on in its games and its hardware.

In the past few years alone there have been a few kickstarters to attempt to revive the machine.

Most of them have failed the Vega+, The Elite System Spectrum come to mind with some exceptions

Meanwhile over in the USA the speccy wasn't even a footnote in computer history. In 1982

Sinclair research partnered with Timex corporation

to enter the home computer business and distribute the Timex Sinclair

1000 modeled after the ZX81.

It's fair to say that this wasn't a very successful partnership with the domination of Commodore, Apple, Atari and IBM.

I was lucky enough to pick up this Timex computer, which was graciously donated to me by The Obsolete Geek.

Let's take a closer look at the machine.

This Timex Sinclair TS2068 was released in 1983 and is based on the ZX Spectrum 48k

I've heard about speccy clones

And I guess technically this is one, although you could call it an official clone as it was in partnership with Sinclair Research.

This machine was advertised as having color graphics sound and a whopping

72k of memory all for $200. This is a little misleading the machine actually has 48K of RAM

But with a 24 K ROM for Sinclair BASIC and other things. Let's take a closer look at the machine

The TS2068 has a 42 key chiclet keyboard.

And there's a flap on the right-hand side of the case that when lifted will expose a cartridge port now

There are about seven or eight cartridges official cartridges that work with this machine unfortunately

I don't have any to test on this video

But there are official cartridges that have games and educational software that do run on the cartridge port and there are

specific Timex

2068 games and software that you can buy and run on this machine on.

The left hand side is the power switch and a joystick port and if we turn the machine over to the right hand side

There's another joystick port. I can't say I've ever seen a design like this where there's two joystick ports on either side of the case

On the back of the unit from right to left is an RF output for connecting the system to a television a

power input, which needs plus 15 volts DC,a

microphone and the earphone input - these are standard inputs for loading software from cassettes a

Monitor out which is just a standard composite and an expansion port for connecting printers and other peripherals

this is actually an RS232 serial interface.

I do like the sleek design of this thing the keyboard feels good, but not as good as a spectrum plus, but it's pretty solid

Now there are two main differences with this machine compared to a ZX Spectrum

Sinclair BASIC was updated with new keywords that are quite useful.

The "FREE" BASIC command will return the amount of free memory available as you can see in this example.

There's also an additional six other BASIC commands that have been included in the Timex machine that are not part of the Sinclair Spectrum BASIC.

The second and the more important change is with the inclusion of a cartridge port means that the 48 kilobytes of RAM is Bank

Switched. This is a fairly substantial change from a ZX Spectrum and rendered most software incompatible.

Ultimately what you're going to want to do is play ZX spectrum games and unfortunately out of the box

compatibility with a ZX spectrum is very low only around 2% or 2 to 5% of

compatibility with games and the reason for that is because of the memory bank switching

That's found in this machine

Which doesn't exist on a regular ZX spectrum and the reason for the Bank switching memory is for the cartridge and the ability to load

cartridges on this machine and

unfortunately that causes

compatibility....significant

compatibility issues with a regular ZX spectrum. So in order to increase compared ability with ZX spectrum there was actually an official

cartridge which emulated a ZX Spectrum 48k

Model machine that you could buy and plug into this machine via the cartridge port now unfortunately

They are super super rare and impossible to find and I think there's only a really only a handful of them ever made however

There is a solution and that is if we replace the custom ROM image

That's found in this machine with just an originals that expect from 48 K ROM

That's found in a regular ZX spectrum machine, then compatibility will increase significantly

So let's take a look at that now.

So of course as always let's crack open this machine and take a peek at the internals

Now just turn the system over and with a FlatHead head screwdriver. There are seven screws

You will need to remove take note of where they all go because they are not all the same size

now once

That's done turn the machine back over and gently lift the case

You will notice that the keyboard is attached via this ribbon connector

Just remove it and that will expose the motherboard. There is no RF shielding or anything else like that in this machine

So let's take a look at the internals of the machine

These two chips are the ROM chips the one on the left is the Sinclair ROM chip

And the one on the right is the customized Timex extended ROM, which contains the extended basic commands

I talked about previously as well as other functionality

The Z80 or "Zed"80 runs at 3.52Mhz which is slightly faster than the 3.50Mhz

of a PAL

48k Sinclair Spectrum. The sound chip is the

AY-3-8912 which is the same chip, that's used in the ZX Spectrum 128k

Next to that is an internal speaker, and there's no way to adjust its volume

These are the DRAM chips that make up the Timex Sinclair internal memory

This is the Timex SCLD chip, and this is the chip that's responsible for the color generation in the Timex computer

Now one thing I do want to mention is that these wires look like an aftermarket modification has been made

but in reality

This is a factory stand and this is what you get out of the box when you open up the motherboard and take a look

at the internals

Okay, so how do we convert this machine to be more compatible with the ZX spectrum well

It's pretty simple really just remove the Timex, Sinclair ROM from its socket

Just use a Phillips head screwdriver and gently remove this chip and in its place you swap in a ZX spectrum

ROM chip I have a burnt image that I'll be using for this

You can keep the Timex Extended ROM in place as it. Won't be

Referenced and this is all you need to do in order to make this machine more compatible with the ZX spectrum

But please note cartridge games will no longer work

Now if you've uses a tech spectrum before there are a couple of things you'll notice very quickly

The first one is the colors are different than what you're used to and this is because of the scld chip

generation which generates the colors in this machine

It's slightly

different than the ULA chip in the ZX

Spectrum and the other thing you'll notice is how noisy the composite signal is and this is actually not a hardware fault or something

Wrong with my machine. This is not a dry solder joint or anything like that

This is how it is out of the box.

Now there are some modifications that can be done to address both of these things you can actually do some

Modifications to get a more authentic color palette as well as an s-video mod to get a much better video

Signal, and this is something that I'll probably look at doing in a follow-up video

But for now here are a couple of examples of some ZX Spectrum 48k

games loaded off cassette that are running on the Timex Sinclair 2068

Why Won't My Cat Use The Litter Box? Most Common Litter Box Problems and How To Solve Them - Duration: 6:16.

Hi guys! Welcome back your channel, it's Claire and Rags and this week we are going to

be helping you with your little box of troubles now if you have a cat like Rags

who is mostly indoor then a litter box is a very important part of the furniture

but there are few issues that can come up with a litter box and this includes

why your cat doesn't use a litter box and smell and where to put your litter

box in general. So this video me and Rags are going to be answering some of those questions for you

Why has my cat stopped using their litter box? Now if your cat has

stop using their litter box and it started messing in other places of house there

is not a malicious reason. Believe it or not. Now cats are habitually clean so one of the

reasons your cat might not be using the litter box is that it isn't clean enough

for them. What you need to be doing is cleaning out the litter tray and at

least once a day and then you want to be washing at the litter train once a week

now to wash a litter tray all you need is some gloves some dish soap and a sponge

just give it a good old clean let it dry and then fill it back up. This will make sure

that is nice and clean for your cat and your cat will be happy using it so if

your cat has stoped using their a tray just go in and give it a good scrub and make

sure that you are emptying out whatever they leave in there regularly. No one

wants to go and use a toilet that haven't been flushed now do we? If your

cat has a urinary infection then going to the bathroom for them is going to be

very painful and very uncomfortable so they are going to start associating the

litter box with this pain and discomfort so they're going to go and try and avoid

this place and so they end up peeing and pooing in other places in the house if

your cat does start acting like this take them to the vets to get treatment it

is very easily treated and shouldn't be left untreated for a long time it can

cause kidney problems and mainly them getting something a little bit more

serious. Diarrhea it's also a big thing if your cat does have an upset stomach

they might not make it to the litter box in time because they have some issues

so again if your cat is doing this take them to the vet to get treated

The second question is how can I combat litter box odor? Now people with cats who

uses boxes know that they're not the most fragrant of things to have around

the house but there are things you can do to minimize the smell and the owner from

their litter tray. Cats will also not really like the litter box if

it is too bit too smelly they won't use it and they may start messing in other

places of the house. Now the very best thing you can do to reduce your smells

is as I said before make sure that you are cleaning the litter box on a regular

basis make sure that you're cleaning up after your cat at least once a day you

are washing and drying the litter tray and at least once a week and you are

replacing the litter tray once a year. Now there are deodorizers that you can

get in big pet shops but if it's not your kind of thing and you find that a

little bit expensive there are things in your own home that you can use to

deodorize your litter box you can sprinkle some baking soda onto the

litter or you can sprinkle dry green tea leaves. These will help neutralize the

smells in the litter tray and stop them with that nasty smelly pong. If you do

prefer to go to the shop and get one of these deodorizing products then make

sure that you get something that is either nonscented or only ever slightly

scented. Cats themselves don't like strong smells so if they come and

speckle a litter box and it suddenly smells like potpourri they might be put

of using it. Cats tend to not want to use a litter box if it is a bit smelly and I

guess we're the same no one wants to use a smelly toilet.

The third one is - My cat trails cat litter all around the house and how can I stop this.

Oh yes - the litter decoration!

Now this problem is actually fairly easy to get rid of and Rags has a very new

posh potty which I'm going to show you now - Ragsy come and show your new potty

all right fine I'll do it. This is Ragsy's new very posh litter litter house I suppose

if the door opens - Here's her tray! underneath we have a mat which stops her from trailing litter everywhere

Now as you see from Ragsy's posh potty she has

a litter tray mat underneath her tray now these things are an absolute game

changer and I absolutely recommend by everyone. They are really really cheap, widely

available and will stop any extra litter that's on your cat's paws from getting trailed around the house

And last one is where do I put my litter tray?

now location is everything when it comes to litter trays. Placement is really really

important. You need to make sure that your cat's litter tray is far away from

where they eat and drink if their food or their water is anywhere near their

litter tray they may see it as being contaminated and won't eat or drink

there and to reduce this just make sure that the litter tray is somewhere

private somewhere away from their food and somewhere that is well ventilated

Privacy is also very important especially if you have more than one cat

and make sure that they have a litter tray each and they are far away from one another.
