Meet the couple who are on a permanent US road trip - Duration: 7:43.

Meet the couple who sold their home and gave up their high-flying careers to live their lives on a PERMANENT road trip

The neverending road trip is a dream for most, but not this couple.

Joe Neiheisel and Emilie Johnson, who are both 46, wake up every morning to stunning views of some of the USAs most beautiful national parks – and all they need to do is open up the doors of their van.

Tired of the rat race, the pair gave up top jobs in marketing and finance to follow their dream of life on the road.

Joe and Emilie quit their jobs in marketing and finance in the city last year.

The couple, from Cincinnati, Ohio, set off with Uschi the dog in their self-converted Mercedes Sprinter 144 Hi Roof on Christmas Day 2016.

Now nearly a year into their big adventure, the pair have already experienced destinations such as California, Colorado, Utah, Oregon, Idaho and Washington – with no plans to return to the nine-to-five drag.

Emilie said: We are kind of winging it, following the sun and sport.

Most days we wake up in a national forest and make a good breakfast, enjoy our coffee, and make sure our dog has had a little fun, then well typically go for a mountain bike ride or ski.

We almost always cook our own meals, and we almost always stay on public lands.

We have slept in the van or a tent every night this year, except for one night when the van was being repaired and another night we chose to get a hotel because we were both sick.

We are extremely comfortable in the van. We have everything with us at all times, and we put careful thought during the build-out process to make sure it served our needs.

We learned early on when we have the opportunity to visit friends and family, we prefer to spend time with them in a meaningful way.

So, while we jump on the opportunity to take a long, hot shower in a home, we take care of all of lifes errands like grocery shopping and laundry while on the road.

Joe says the permanent road trip is the fulfillment of a long-term dream for the couple, who have always enjoyed outdoor activities together.

They selected their van in June 2016, and with the help of friends converted it into their new mobile home.

And after giving up their city careers, they now make their living working on freelance photography projects and testing and distributing outdoor products.

Joe said: As much as I wanted to take on this adventure, it was very difficult to walk away from the familiar life we had established.

Ultimately, it became very clear that I was not happy in the city, or in my career, and that nothing made me happier than being outside.

That is what inspired me to finally abandon the ordinary for this extraordinary life.

There are lots of big ups and downs, but even if it ended tomorrow and we had to start over, this experience will have been totally worth it.

I have learned so much, met so many awesome people, seen so many beautiful places, and Im becoming an infinitely better person.

The pair, who have been together for 13 years and married for 11, say that the experience of living in such close proximity has strengthened their relationship – and they have learned to adapt.

Emilie said: We quickly learned that while we once thought we did everything together, there is no comparison to living full time in a van.

We are doing better at carving out time apart, and it definitely makes a difference.

I can tell you our cute dog couldnt be happier – she has her pack with her 24/7.

The highlight for me is the journey as a whole, and the calm state of mind Im embracing.

While it might have taken me months to truly settle into van life, I immediately noticed and appreciated I was no longer running a million miles a minute or spreading myself too thin.

Its amazing to truly take control of your time and slow down the pace so you genuinely enjoy life and soak up each experience to its fullest.

According to Joe, the best thing about the experience for him is having the opportunity to be his own boss.

And the couple claim there is nothing they miss about a conventional lifestyle – with no plans to bring their adventures to an end any time soon.

Joe said: I have never been so motivated to make things happen. There is nobody else telling me what to focus on.

Of course we were worried about how we were going to cover costs.

If it didnt work out, we wondered if we would be able to get good jobs again. Now I look back at these worries and laugh.

What is the worst thing that could happen? You go broke and have to start over. So what?.

This experience is so transformative that we are bound to wind up in a better place, and we are already seeing the reward for taking this risk.

Friends and family are incredibly supportive and so happy for us.

Many admit that they are envious of the lifestyle, and a few are even putting plans in place to do something similar.

Now that we are finding our groove and producing income doing what we love, it is very likely that this will turn into a permanent road trip.
