people view English majors as like, like what are you gonna do after you graduate
my name is Brittany Hilgers. I graduated Arizona State in '05 with
a BA in English. Being an English major has helped me because ... it's helped me
basically be able to convey an idea and a story. I didn't realize that what I
want if I wanted to be in film and television until towards the end, so I
kind of took my time my four years here and explored many of my desires within
the English realm. There's just a variety of ways you can go about it
there's so many different career paths I I know that I first thought I was going
to be a teacher, you know, and do it that way, my current job now is I work on a
television show called Psych. That's for USA Network. My technical job
term is the writers assistant, we basically sit in a room, all nine of us
writers, coming up with stories basically to be episodes of television I mean
what's cooler than that? When you study English you learn how to to analyze
things I felt like I needed the time to to read stories to learn stories to talk
about them to you know really understand character and plot and like you know
telling compelling stories basically you know and that's what Arizona State gave
for me because I wanted to be a writer all I did was write write write write
write write that's something that is invaluable if you want to be a writer
and and and go out and experience things put yourself out of your comfort zone
that's what I tell people if you want to be a good writer it helps you look at
the world in a different way that's exactly why I went there and I'm doing
what I want to do so it's been amazing
