USA news on Youtube Sep 19 2017

The Caribbean island of Dominica has been "devastated" by Hurricane Maria, the country's Prime Minister tells CNN.

The powerful storm, which made landfall Monday night, has since been downgraded to a Category 4 with sustained winds of 155 mph. After it passes over Dominica it is on course to score a direct hit on the US territory of Puerto Rico -- the first hurricane of its strength to do so in 85 years.

"We're just waiting for daybreak to do an assessment of the damage," Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit told CNN's Rosemary Church.

"Our first order of business will be search and rescue to ensure we can account for every single citizen and residents who were on the island during this really devastating hurricane."

A statement from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said that its record-topping winds reached 160 miles per hour when it hit the island nation. In an update the Center said that reports "indicate significant damage to structures has occurred in Dominica."

Maria made landfall on Dominica late Monday, coming ashore at 9:15 p.m. ET. It was so powerful that it tore the roof off the Prime Minister's residence. "Personally I was affected," Skerrit said. "The roof of the residence caved in because of the strength of the wind. But I was taken to safe ground by ... police officers, thank God.

"This hurricane stayed in the country for a very, very long time and (was) just unrelenting. I don't think there were very many roofs which would survive the hurricane." In a Facebook post he added: "So far we have lost all what money can buy and replace. "My greatest fear for the morning is that we will wake to news of serious physical injury and possible deaths as a result of likely landslides triggered by persistent rains."

The storm will continue moving toward Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands as a strong Category 4 or a Category 5 and is not expected to diminish in strength.

Relentless march After Dominica, Puerto Rico is in Maria's sights. It is moving toward the island as an "extremely dangerous major hurricane, and a hurricane warning has been issued for that island," the hurricane center said.

Puerto Rico's governor, Ricardo Rosselló, has declared a state of emergency ahead of that landfall, which will likely happen Wednesday.

A hurricane warning from the NHC remains in effect for Guadeloupe, Dominica, St. Kitts, Nevis, and Montserrat, the US and British Virgin Islands as well as Puerto Rico, Culebra, and Vieques. US President Donald Trump issued an emergency declaration for the US territory for federal assistance to augment the territory's storm-response initiatives.

The ferocity of Maria bears striking similarities to Hurricane Andrew, the Category 5 hurricane which hit the Bahamas and Florida in 1992, says CNN meterologist Pedram Javaheri. Both storms are compact, and Maria's wind speed comes close to that of Hurricane Andrew -- 165 mph -- when it hit southern Florida

Bracing for impact Hours before Maria's expected landfall on Dominica -- and just over week after the island was brushed by Irma -- Skerrit urged residents to take any belongings that could become dangerous projectiles indoors.

"The next few hours should be placed on cleaning up around the house and on your properties rather than stockpiling weeks of foods and other supplies," Skerrit said in a televised speech. "This is not a system that will linger very long. Therefore, the goal must not be on stockpiling supplies but on mitigating damage caused by flying objects."

Puerto Rico on alert Puerto Rico sheltered many of the evacuees who fled Hurricane Irma's wrath in other Caribbean islands. Now those evacuees and native Puerto Ricans are bracing for another powerful hurricane. Rosselló ordered evacuations ahead of deteriorating conditions, telling CNN that extensive preparations had been made to mitigate Maria's potential impact.

"We're as ready as we can be," he told CNN's Don Lemon. "This sort of event is a very dangerous event, high winds, a slow storm and a lot of rainfall. And this coming just about two weeks after Irma skirted off the northeast of Puerto Rico.

"We've made preparations... we've focused on really the only thing that matters right now, which is making sure people are safe. We have 500 shelters, (we're) moving people to those shelters and hopefully weathering the storm so we can rebuild Puerto Rico.

Calling its potential impact "catastrophic," Rosselló said that the island was expected to experience tropical storm force winds for about two and a half days and sustained high level hurricane winds for "the better part of a day."

We expect to feel storm winds, tropical storm winds, since Tuesday up until late on Thursday. That's about two-and-a-half days of tropical storm winds, and on Wednesday we will feel the brunt -- all of the island will feel the brunt of sustained category four or five winds, Rosselló said. "This is an event that will be damaging to the infrastructure, that will be catastrophic, and our main focus -- our only focus right now -- should be to make sure we save lives."

If Maria strikes the island as forecast, it will be "more dangerous than Hugo and Georges," he said. Hurricane Hugo killed five people in Puerto Rico in 1989, and Hurricane Georges caused more than $1.7 billion in damage to the island in 1998. In Salinas, a city on the island's southern coast where the storm is expected to hit hard, CNN saw dozens of people queuing for water and essentials ahead of the hurricane's anticipated impact.

Hurricane and tropical storm warnings The storm will affect parts of the Leeward Islands and the British and US Virgin Islands for next couple of days, the center said. Other Leeward Islands are now under hurricane warnings, including Guadeloupe, Dominica, St. Kitts, Nevis and Montserrat. the US Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands are under warnings. Trump issued an emergency declaration for the US Virgin Islands. There are tropical storm warnings in effect for Martinique, Antigua and Barbuda, Saba and St. Eustatius, St. Martin, Anguilla and St. Lucia.

The British Foreign Office said more than 1,300 troops are in the region, on affected islands or nearby locations, ready to help after Maria goes by. One military team has been deployed to the British Virgin Islands. A British military reconnaissance team is on standby to go to Montserrat and assess needs, the office said. The HMS Ocean is set to arrive in the area at week's end with 60 tons of government supplies.

detroit lions schedule |detroit lions vs new york giants| detroit lions schedule for 2017 - Duration: 3:38.

Now 2-0, is it time to start believing in the Detroit Lions?

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — He took a step back before he leaned forward, and it almost turned disastrous. Maybe in years past it would have. What with the Curse of Bobby Layne and all.

Not that Detroit Lions punt returner Jamal Agnew cares a lick about whatever sorcery enveloped this franchise during its half-century of (mostly) losing football. He just wanted to catch the ball Monday night at Metlife Stadium.

He damn near didn't. Which made his game-swinging, fourth-quarter, 88-yard punt return for a touchdown that much more stunning. After misjudging the distance of the punt, Agnew lunged forward to snag it off his shoestrings near the 12-yard line.

He cut left. Back right. Slithered through a gap. Juked the punter. Raced down the left sideline, his teammates thrusting their fists in the air as he sprinted. They knew what it meant. Heck, the whole state of Michigan knew it meant: a Lions' road win – they beat the Giants, 24-10, to open their season 2-0. They beat a team that made the playoffs a year ago. A team that crushed them when they played here last December. A team that dominated the line of scrimmage

Well, that didn't change as much as the Lions would have liked. At least not on the offensive line, where a slew of holding calls – five, if you're counting – imploded a few of their drives. And until left tackle Greg Robinson gets better – or Taylor Decker gets healthy – protection of Matthew Stafford's blind side will be an issue. Especially against the league's better defenses.

If nothing else, the Giants have one of those. What they have offensively is plain offensive. Judging from the booing that began with New York's third offensive play. It's hard to blame them. Football fans here don't think much of the Lions. For good reason. So, from their perspective, the Giants were getting outplayed by an inferior team.

Using the Joe McNally Ezybox Speed-Lite 2 Plus - Duration: 11:00.

Hi I'm joe mcnally an ambassador for Lastolite By Manfrotto I'm here in a working garage in Allentown, PA

We're gonna make a series of location portraits here in this amazing

character-filled garage, and we're gonna do it, as always with light. We're gonna speak the 'Language of Light' today

To sort of emphasize the character of this place and our subject.

We're going to be using a brand new light shaping tool.

I'm gonna call it throughout the day the Speed-Lite 2 the official name is the Joe McNally Ezybox Speed-Lite 2 Plus

It's small, versatile and it's got a great quality of light.

We're gonna be using it all day long.

As with all locations.

I have a foreground, middleground, background. Elijah is my subject, he's the star of the show, so I put him in a logical position.

But then what I'm going to do

is try to manage my background. One of the ways you manage a background in aperture priority, which is the mode I'm in

is to underexpose it. Get control of it.

Hence he will also become underexposed

Hence the need for foreground lighting.

All of this is just bits and pieces of a puzzle that you're putting together as a location photographer.

All right

Alright Elijah. Just kind of look this way... with me... stick with me. That looks really nice... really good

I'm at a 100th of a second at f/4. This box is in no particularly

suitably oriented place right now. It's just there.

It's actually putting out a pretty good quality of light, but we're going to maneuver. A nice thing that's happening in the background is

we've got some shadows. Some spectral highlights casting some diagonal shadows upwards which is sort of unusual.

Giving me a little interest back in there.

So I'm gonna see how close I can get this light.

Okay, cool ... nice.

Maybe kick your right shoulder towards me a little bit Elijah. There you go ... nice ... good

cool ... good look

Really nice, stay with me

Cool, so now we're starting to get this sort of under control. Nice main light.

It's not a big sumptuous studio flash, but you wouldn't want that in here.

You don't want him to look like he's in a studio. You want him to look like he's in a garage.

Because I'm managing the background and I've got good drama in all of this

I'm starting to lose some of the background, so I'm gonna start to light pieces of it.

So can we take that ... let's make it a Group C Light

and we'll bang it into the engine block.

All right here we go again.

Good look, good look Elijah.

I lost a lot of light with the intermittent sunlight, so I'm going to see if I can fix that a little bit.

I'm gonna put a little low-light into his face.

Which is a classic over an under beauty combination. Which you wouldn't think looking at Elijah

you know he's like this masculine guy, but it's just gonna be a little inflection

and I think it'll give him just a little more lift and

you know very quickly what we've done now is, two lights will be here

Okay

A little kicker light on the engine, a little kicker light on the tools and kind of a background wash over there that we're firing through a

fan just to throw a little shape to the light.

So I think just in a matter of minutes we have lit this garage.

Joe: What you guys think?

Cali: Yeah, I like that.

Joe: It's a little bit bright. I gotta take that down.

Andrew: Should we have him tie the bandana around his wrist?

Go back just a tiny bit. There you go good, good ... Spin your right shoulder a tiny bit towards me. Good ... looking good

What we've done basically is we've kind of taken control of the garage

with speed lights.

There's accent lights all over the place.

The beautiful thing about the modern technology of the speed lights is that in this system

I can go to a thing called high speed sync which enables me to go to extraordinarily high shutter speed

relative to the synchronization of my flashes

I'm up there in turns my shutter speed. I'm a thousand two thousand of a second.

I'm at f/1.4 the minimization of the depth of field has turned the garage into something

that's almost sort of pretty. It's kind of just given it this context. This out-of-focus glow.

We've lit it warm. I'm also on a cloudy white balance which further accentuates the warmth.

And then Elijah is doing an amazing job up front with his posing so we complemented that posing with

a box that's over and a box that's under.

They're both Speed-Lite 2's this one here has what we call an 'egg crate' on it.

This is an additional component you can get.

It's a 'Fabric Grid' you know ... some folks will just call them grids. I have grown up calling them 'Egg Crates'

They funnel the light. So what this is doing now for this low light,

it's channeling it up into his face and not allowing it to spread on his body, hence making for a really nice ...

Kind of a beautiful combination of light that emphasized the intensity of his expression and his eyes as he relates the camera.

Good look ... nice

Yeah, I like that a lot. I like that a lot ... awesome stay with me

So now we're rolling into the second half of our shoot. We've moved Elijah

He's now physically in the car, kind of with a sort of rockstar persona.

Black car right? Specular highlights. gonna be a problem to light

I'm gonna have to exert maximum amount of control if I approach this car with any sort of flash.

That's where the recessed diffuser comes in.

This edge baffle as I sometimes refer to it. Gives you a depth to the diffusion panel here that really allows you to feather the light and

control it in a very precise fashion.

The first shot had more lights. This is only got a main light and a backlight, done deal.

But the car itself is so shiny, Elijah is wearing a black jacket

he's got shades on, the whole thing is about mood and sort of you know style, and you don't want to over light that and

you also have to make sure that you get enough light on it.

There's a real middle ground you have to hit.

So we're protecting the the car from getting a hot highlight from my lead flash here with the

recessed diffuser over the light.

It's columnating light.

Concentrating it on Elijah and also the recessed nature of it is

keeping the hit off of the glass and the shiny nature of the car.

The backlight I'll be totally honest with you is a complete accident. I put it up there

I was thinking I would hide it off camera, it ended up being in camera and creating this sort of like

crazy sort of highlight glow in the background and

the consensus on the set is that we like it, so I'll take credit for it. You know. It's my idea

*Laughter*

I knew what I was doing all right.

Can we get past it, okay?

So that's it. We got a main light and a back light

and then we have a great character in front of the lens shooting a 24 mm lens and

we're gonna knock this out. The whole idea now for Elijah is to direct himself

towards that main light, keep his chin up

into it, if he looks down and away because the light is so specific it's going to miss him.

So he has to be conscious of his key

and then the whole thing is to project attitude towards the camera. Which I've already seen that he can do extremely well.

All right

So we're at the last shot of the day. What I've decided

relative to what we did already here

I'm gonna put another little rim of light on Elijah from the other side of camera, camera left.

It'll come through the windshield. I want it to be gelled so we use a really cool little feature

that's associated with this softbox.

It's got a frame inside with two magnets and what you can do is drop in the Lastolite Strobo accessories

which include grids and gel holders, so I've turned that light into a warm light,

that's going to radiate through the windshield and all we had to do was just open up the softbox and drop this in.

Yeah ... yeah hand up is good because I'm gonna try to get a backlight in there.

So we're kind of wrapping. Nice second picture, simpler than I thought it was going to be in many ways.

Again, not to emphasize this over much

but the recessed nature of the main light really made it much more easy to control. With that amount of

reflective black car a large softbox would just be a nightmare, that was our main light.

Our backlight I explained was kind of just by accident

it just you know flared into the picture and we decided to leave it alone because it looked cool.

Then add the mix of Elijah's character and sort of sense of cool

sitting in this in this hot car and you've got a fairly simple photograph

that I don't really want to just

say is over simple because you know the hard part is just dealing with this reflective surface.

Which we did reasonably well ... So let's take a look

Joe: Elijah you were awesome.

Elijah: Thank you, thank you

Joe: Nice picture

Elijah: You did OK Joe

Joe: Yeah, you know ... this is actually my first assignment

I showed up at Manfrotto to fix the air conditioning and they said hey you want to shoot some pictures and be in

a video? I said, okay, yeah, sure what do I have to do? It sounds good to me.

*Laughter*

F4 US: The Starting Point for Racing's Young Lions - Duration: 4:55.

The F4 series is really geared at the guys

coming from karting, and their first step

into cars, and as you can see if you look through our

field a lot of our drivers have a karting pedigree,

are karting champions in various series.

I actually came straight out of karting,

I raced in the Briggs & Stratton LO206 karting series,

and then when I was 16 I hopped into my

F4 car for the first time.

It's primarily aimed at the karting kids that

want to jump into a professional programme

right off the bat, and it's a very affordable programme,

and it's a great transition from a tag kart

or a shifter kart into an open wheel car.

Well for me, I think that this is probably

the best route for myself, because I've always

done a Honda ladder system,

whether it was go karts or F1600 and now F4, but really

the biggest key part was the price structure.

The car itself is $45,000,

they do an engine lease from Honda.

We manage the engine and that's $6,600 a year.

A set of Pirellis is under $1000,

So the cost itself for the car is very, very affordable.

We were spending almost that in go karting.

We travelled a little bit more in the karting

and I think that's a big travel expense,

but they've condensed it, they've done a very good job,

the SCCA, of having three races per weekend,

enough track time, the drivers all... we come out of a

race weekend feeling like we got our money's worth.

It's a very affordable series for the amount of track time

you're getting, I think we're getting close to four hours

this year -- this weekend, and there's a lot of competitors

here, I think we have close to 30 competitors

which is a great field for us.

The competition is pretty stout, and the racing,

you get triple-headers, so you get a lot of

track time against a lot of good guys.

You have a lot of young drivers who are coming

out here trying to make a name for their selves,

and there's 30+ cars at the first event,

so that's probably the biggest thing, and

we're now running here with IMSA and F1.

F4's really attractive, not only from the

competition standpoint, but also the partners involved,

there's a lot of support from Honda, Onroak, and Pirelli,

and having series partners like that

who have a pedigree in racing.

It's a new car, it's a safe car, carbon tub,

paddle shift, new technology.

It is an FIA-certified car, so it's very very safe,

that is a critical element of this programme.

Jumping from karts to cars is definitely a hard transition

because you have a little bit of aerodynamics

now in karts but you don't have the suspension

and everything, which is probably the hardest part

because you have to really learn to allow the car to roll.

Every driver that has come from karting,

when they get in the F4 car says "Whoa things are going

so much slower, I have a lot more time than in a go kart"

because in karting you're in a corner 90% of the time.

You have to be very more precise than you do in a

go kart, in a go kart you have the horsepower to pull

you out of a corner if you make a small mistake,

but with one of these cars sitting behind me

if you make a small mistake you might lose

three, four, maybe even five tenths in a corner.

In karts, everything happens so quick because

you're a quarter of an inch off the ground

and everything's going by you, but in cars, with

the suspension and everything, heavier car,

you just have to really slow your hands down.

That's absolutely true, yeah, the less you do the better,

the more the car works, if you're in a corner and you

can just hold it there, you can feel the car really work

with the suspension.

A lot of new challenges, like standing starts,

and things like that, so it's just another

great learning experience for me to go through.

The drivers have to go through an educational process

as well, so they're required to have 10 hours of training.

The SAFEisFAST programme is fantastic -

that's one of the libraries of resources that they

can go to, and they can pick from what curriculum

format that they would like to look at.

One of the best things about SAFEisFAST is that it's all

real racing drivers, team owners or something like that.

We can watch the videos and then we write a summary

about what was in the videos... it's a great tool to have.

It's an FIA-certified series, which I think attracts

a lot of young drivers who want to have a

European or an F1 career, so they want to start

working on their FIA certifications already.

With the FIA designation, these kids can actually earn

FIA Superlicense points, so that's a very valuable thing

and it's the only programme

here in the States that offers that.

For the price point and what you get out of the series,

there's nothing that can beat it.

It's one of the best series out in the country,

as of now. It's just an outstanding series.

chester bennington funeral| Mike Shinoda Says Chester Bennington|chester bennington last video - Duration: 1:37.

Mike Shinoda Says Chester Bennington Was 'Such a Happy, Fun Guy'

LP rapper describes how Rick Rubin convinced them to play an upcoming Oct. 27 tribute show. As Linkin Park prepare to pay tribute to late lead singer Chester Bennington next month, rapper/guitarist Mike Shinoda has opened up about to Los Angeles radio station KROQ about his friend and bandmate. Shinoda appeared on the station on Monday (Sept. 18) to talk about the Oct. 27 concert celebration of Bennington at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles as well as how super producer Rick Rubin convinced the group to get up on stage for the first time since they lost Chester.

"I had gone to [producer] Rick Rubin as a source of guidance," Shinoda said. "He had said, 'I think you guys need to get on stage. I think that'll be the thing that'll feel good. It'll be super, super hard.' We haven't gone out together in public, we haven't played — we haven't gone on stage. He said, 'The fans want to see you. Not because they want to see a show, there's a cathartic experience that needs to happen and it'll inform what you guys are doing.' And I thought it over — and I know that for some of the guys in the band, getting on stage [without Chester] is more scary than other guys in the band, but I will say that for all of us, it's definitely the thing that we want to do. It feels like the right way to celebrate Chester."

Bennington, 41, committed suicide at his home in Palo Verdes Estates, California, on July 20 and while Shinoda said the loss was tragic and hard to handle, he also had fond, bright memories of his friend and longtime musical conspirator. "With something like this, and it was the same at his funeral… I know that the circumstances of his passing were really dark, and as we said at the time, the darkness that he had was always there and was kind of part of the package, but what was so unique and special about this guy is that he used it as fuel to do so many positive things," said Shinoda, who also had high praise for the group's fans, who have put on hundreds of tribute events all around the globe to honor Bennington.

"The fans have been incredible. I don't think we could have ever expected such an outpouring of love and all these tributes," he said. Those events are, in part, what inspired the upcoming show, as the fans all organically gravitated toward the song "One More Light" from the band's most recent album. "Fans everywhere were making these montages of images of Chester, images of themselves to this song and so we realized it struck a chord with them and we wanted to let them know we see that, we hear that so we made an official video for that." The moving video dropped on Monday and Shinoda said it was a gift to those hardcore fans who have supported them in so many ways over the years.

While the band's lyrics and Bennington's performances could often be dark, Shinoda said the singer had a lighter side that was equally important to highlight at the upcoming tribute show. "His overall... the way he was, he was such a happy guy, he was such a fun guy," said Shinoda. "When he'd walk in the room, there was such a positive, funny, upbeat energy, and that's what we wanna get out of this show... I know it's gonna be a roller coaster of emotion. But when we talk about this and when we're focusing on the show, it's really about, like we say, celebrating life."
