Teach. Lead. Leverage.
The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.
Committed educators take this daily and the profession regarded but not often recognized.
Teaching.
Together, we represent diverse contexts and communities.
But unite around a set of common beliefs to ignite the fire of learning for all students.
Step one of a thousand miles for the Journey to 2030.
Whats new? Nothing. The fuel is here, the road is paved, our future
beyond the horizon.
The Journey is bonded by beliefs.
Students are our top priority. The whole is greater than the sum.
Access and understanding of technological advances are necessary to keep up with 21st century needs.
Teachers must have the time and resources to unite with students on the step of their journey.
Our goal, is to help them find this path.
Why 2030?
Education advocate Barnett Berry and twelve outstanding teacher leaders, co-author the book
'Teaching 2030.' What we must do for our students in our public schools, now and in the future.
This work provided a timeline to execute the transformation.
To help move this vision forward the
Arizona K12 center launched the Arizona Teacher Solutions team. An innovative endeavor that brought together twenty teacher leaders, committed to
imagineering a future for teaching and learning in Arizona.
More than one hundred and fifty educators convened to define the steps necessary to get us there.
We must create dynamic and flexible learning environments, and find new ways to measure school success.
Expand Beyond today's brick-and-mortar buildings, and
transform our schools into community Hubs that support students and their families. View teaching as a well compensated profession
ensuring every student has an effective teacher committed to spreading expertise.
The path must become a highway where practice meets policy.
"We have undermined teachers too in their efforts lead for many years and for many different reasons.
But primarily what we have done is created a school system that
isolates teachers in their own classrooms, keeping them from spreading their expertise from classroom to classroom
from school to school to
district to district, and literally all across this country. It is time now to blur the lines of distinction between those who teach in schools
and those who lead them."
Step 1. Let's find ways to capture real-time data so that teachers better understand what students need and how they learn best.
"You as a policymaker
need to go and talk to the most successful people in our society. You need to look at those people on the Forbes list and
Ask them what were the things that got you to where you are?
What were the skills that you use and what are the skills you use now?
That are make you successful in what you do.
And I guarantee none of them are going to say I was great at taking tests."
Step two.
Educate the ones educating the students on all aspects of their profession.
"We can't be stuck on on the past we need to collaborate and innovate and come up with ideas.
Not just to protect our past ways of teaching, but to find innovative ways to collaborate with one another and progress
education."
Step 3. Welcome parents and community members as collaborative partners. Our goals are parallel.
Step infinitely. Let's give teachers a primary seat at the policy table.
There are currently
52,000 teachers and teacher leaders in Arizona,
3.7 million educators across the country. Let's share these steps with administrators, parents, community liaisons,
policymakers,
educational organizations ,and business leaders.
Imagine what could happen if we all recommended the journey to 2030 special report.
